Giving Up The Dream

from Giving Up The Dream by Ian Peacock

about

When I was fifteen, I discovered the joy of music. I bought myself a second hand 'Encore' electric guitar with a picture of the devil on it. I got hold of the 'Definitely Maybe' chord book by Oasis and practiced every day until I was able to play and sing each song. The rock n roll bug had completely got hold of me and I couldn't imagine doing anything else other than wiring and performing my own songs on stage and in the studio.

After twenty years of trying to make music my career, courting the gaze of record labels, publishers and managers, playing gigs all over the country and recording multiple albums in home studios, I've finally come to terms with the idea that it's not going to happen now. In fact, as much as I often day-dream about still doing it, the life of a gigging musician is not always fun and it would be very difficult to maintain a healthy marriage and relationship with my children.

And so, I'm finally giving up the dream and whilst it's been a long and painful realisation, it's alright with me.

lyrics

Some call it a mid life crisis
Some call it a crossroads in time
Some call it an honest reflection of how I'm defined
Some call for the priest and confession
Some call on a listening friend
Some call for the doctor's prescription on which they depend

Sometimes you get what you want instead of what you need
Sometimes you should think yourself grateful for all you receive

I'm giving up the dream I had when I was a teen
Giving up the dream, 20 years of trying
Giving up the dream, as sad as it may seem
Giving up the dream is alright with me

Some spend their whole lives in the office
Some spend their free time in the pub
Some worship in stadiums and their first love is a club
Some long for a lottery windfall
Some jump from one job to the next
Some hope for a lasting relationship they can protect

Sometimes you get what you need instead of what you want
Sometimes you believe you know best but the truth is you dont

I'm giving up the dream I had when I was a teen
Giving up the dream, 20 years of trying
Giving up the dream, as sad as it may seem
Giving up the dream is alright with me

It's been a long, long road
And I've been so close to despair
But now is the time to forget what's behind
Don't look to the future or strain to see signs
Just cherish the moments, each sacred component and realise life has been kind....
