The Sword or The Spirit

from The End Of Faith by Ian Peacock & Friends

/

about

Inspired by Jesus' words to Peter in the garden of Gethsemane when he told him to put his sword away after attempting to protect his Lord by cutting off a Roman soldier's ear.

On one level, this is a political statement against the actions and attitudes of powerful governments who still think they can bring 'peace' by force, when in fact, what they usually produce is more violence and hatred. The only thing that can break this cycle of violence, is a spirit of peace, grace and mercy.

To live 'by' this Spirit, seems to go against our very nature, 'an eye for an eye' is what most of us live by, or to bring it into a modern context, be good to those who are good to you (and by implication, be harsh with those who are harsh to you). I want to live in freedom; freedom, not only from war and conflict, but from holding grudges, from not forgiving people who have done me wrong and from my natural tendency to pay people back with judgement instead of undeserved mercy.

This is what it means to live by the Spirit of God.

lyrics

If you live by the sword, you will certainly die by it too
With the weight of the world on your shoulders
now what would you do?

Would you kill for gold and leave the dead to die in the cold?

Would you live by the sword, would you live by the sword?
Will you live by the sword, the sword or the Spirit?

Will they do unto you just as you would have done to them too?
Cos an eye for an eye would make everyone blind, black and blue
If you wear your heart on your sleeve don’t be surprised if you bleed

If you live by the sword, if you live by the sword?
Will you live by the sword, the sword or the Spirit?

Everyone wants to be free but such a high price liberty
Everyone wants to be free
As we learn to be all we can be and conquer all adversaries
Is anyone really free?

If they live by the sword, if you live by the sword?
Will you live by the sword, the sword or the Spirit?
Live by the Spirit
