One Step At A Time

from He Crowns The Humble by Ian Peacock

/

about

For a long time, ‘One Step at a Time’ had the working title of ‘Coldplay-type bouncy tune’! I’d been trying to write more on the keyboard in my quest to improve my skills and depart from the usual chord progressions and riff patterns I usually fall into when starting a song with guitar. I’ve always liked songs with overlapping vocal melodies (The Beatles have some great examples!) and so the chorus was the first creation.

Lyrically, the imagery is taken from the first and last books of the bible, starting with the perfection of the garden of Eden in Genesis and ending with the promise of a city renewed in the glorified presence of God once more. In between, I briefly describe the unfolding break down of God’s good world and his plan to redeem it ‘one step at a time’.

lyrics

When will we finally see the light?
When will you finally set things right?
When will I finally see the time?
When you will finally win this fight?

One step at a time
One step forwards, yours and mine

There was a time when everything was good, everything responding as you’d hoped it would, everything created, everybody good
There was a place when we could see your face, walk and talk together in the cool of day, nothing came between us, we were ok

Then doubt and suspicion did grow, brought weeds, thorns and thistles below
Exchanging the truth for a lie: the ‘we’ and the ‘us’ became ‘I’

One step at a time

There was a time when you could take no more,
looking for a people with an open door, sick of always speaking being ignored
There was place, you came and showed your face,
born into a family of a chosen race, no one made you room - there was no space

From cradled perfection you’d grow
The seeds of redemption you’d sow
But men prefer darkness to light
And so shouted they ‘crucify!’

I see a new Jerusalem full of light and dressed in white
I hear a voice that beckons me: ‘come my children, come my bride’
‘Behold I’m making all things new, I’ll wipe your tears, I’ll walk with you’
The sting of death will be no more
and on your hearts I’ll write my law
From every tribe and every tongue the praise of God will soon be sung
You’ll reign on earth-your will be done
Lord Jesus, may your kingdom come
